Adults on the mat with kids: the gap most gyms miss
Ask an academy about safety and the answer is about coaches. That is the right place to start and the wrong place to stop, because at most martial arts academies the adults a child spends time near are members, not staff.
Where the exposure is
A jiu jitsu academy is not a classroom with one adult at the front. The kids class ends as the adult class arrives. Open mat is everyone. Family classes put parents, teenagers, and small children on the same mat by design. The changing room is shared, or the hallway to it is. An adult member is around children at an academy more than most volunteers are at a school, and almost nobody checks who they are.
A coach credential, however thorough, does not reach any of this. It covers the people the academy chose to put in charge. It says nothing about the people who paid to be there.
What registration screening does
At a Safe Academy 360 academy, the registration a new member already completes carries a screen. The moment the registration lands, the adult who holds the account is checked by legal name and date of birth against the public sex offender registries of all 58 US jurisdictions and state prison system records. The result is back before anyone at the front desk has looked up.
No matching records means exactly that, and the academy sees it that way, with the date it ran and the date it runs again. Everyone screened is screened again each month. A returned record raises an alert to the academy's contact and a review by Safe Academy 360, and nothing is decided until a person has compared the record with the person. The process in full.
The screen is disclosed in the registration agreement the person accepts.
Who is screened, and who is not
- The adult who holds the account is screened: the member themselves for an adult registration, and the parent or guardian who registers a child.
- The screen is on the adult, not the child. A child's details are not what it searches.
- Coaches are screened separately, as the first item of their credential, and again each month like everyone else.
Nothing about any individual's result is published anywhere. A certified academy's public listing shows that registrations are screened. It never shows who was screened or what came back.
Academies that register people elsewhere
An academy that runs its registrations on another platform can still screen a new member. The academy types the person's name and date of birth into a quick screen on its Safe Academy 360 page and gets the same result, from the same sources, with the same monthly repeat and the same review if something returns. It is a deliberate step rather than an automatic one, which means someone has to remember to do it, and the record shows whether they did.
What it cannot do
It cannot tell an academy that a member has no record. A screen is name based, sees only what a public source recorded, and is silent about a source that did not answer. It searches public sex offender registries and state prison records, not county court or federal records. A person who is not on any registry is simply absent from it.
It cannot replace supervision. Who is on the mat with the kids, who is in the changing room, and who is allowed to be alone with a child are questions a written code of conduct answers and a screen does not.
It cannot make anyone safe. No screening catches everyone.
What to ask
Two of the eight questions are about this directly: "Who else is on the mat with the kids?" and "How do you check who joins the academy?" A good answer to the first knows who assists and whether adult members ever join a kids class, and applies the same rules to them. A good answer to the second names what is checked at registration, says honestly that no check catches everyone, and explains what happens when something comes up.
An academy that has never thought about who registers is not a bad academy. It is an academy with a gap it has not seen yet, and a parent asking is often how it gets seen.
